"There is very little in this world that can touch a person’s soul the way music can. The sooner a child can experience this beauty, the better."
Music was a natural part of Liv Marsico’s childhood. Following her father, a notable jazz drummer, Liv’s made a career as a drummer after picking up drumming at age twelve. Liphemra, Liv’s solo project, is currently her main focus, but she’s played with Cold War Kids, Hanni El Khatib, Stone Darling, The Elected, Gothic Tropic, and many others.
Liv recalls that simply being herself, a girl who played drums, led to teasing by schoolmates and not being taken seriously by teachers. And yet, her experience tells a story; in a male-dominated field, she stuck, and continues to stick, with her passion. Liv’s CHIME Gives piece, a bracelet with the words “Different Drummer” inked onto a bronze cymbal medallion, links her drive to continue drumming despite challenges with the name of a documentary film about an influential jazz drummer, Elvin Jones—a man celebrated for being “different,” with a style to call his own.
